Speaking to Metro, Transformers and Bumblebee producer Lorenzo Di Bonaventura confirms they’re working oont an Optimus Prime solo movie. After speaking of the future of the Transformers franchise, he mentioned that they were looking into an animated movie that explains Cybertron mythology and that they’re also looking into an Optimus Prime solo movie, rather than a Bumblebee 2 movie:

Di Bonaventura has spoken before about this possibility, and he repeated it would be rather tricky because of Optimus’ moral compass and character structure:

“It will be hard with Optimus, he is always right, very stoic and is a man of few words … It is kind of like saying, ‘Lets do a movie about Obi-Wan Kenobi?’ But how much is there to say about Obi-Wan? It is not so easy.”

After speaking of the future of the Transformers franchise, he mentioned that they were looking into an animated movie that explains Cybertron mythology and that they’re also looking into an Optimus Prime solo movie, rather than a Bumblebee 2 movie:

“We’re trying to figure out an [Optimus Prime solo movie].”

“It will be hard with Optimus, he is always right, very stoic and is a man of few words … It is kind of like saying, ‘Lets do a movie about Obi-Wan Kenobi?’ But how much is there to say about Obi-Wan? It is not so easy.”

Di Bonaventura and the Transformers franchise team want to get the tone of the Optimus Prime solo film right as he is the leader of the Autobots, and is maybe the most popular Transformer alongside Megatron, his archnemesis and leader of the Decepticons, and the aforementioned Bumblebee, Optimus’ most prominent sidekick. We hope this movie’s handled with the tone Director Travis Knight imprinted on Bumblebee, rather than the over-the-top and ludicrous plots put forward by Director Michael Bay in past Transformers movies.

Directed by Travis Knight from a script written by Christina Hodson, Bumblebee stars Hailee Steinfeld, Pamela Adlon, John Cena, Stephen Schneider, Jorge Lendeborg Jr., Jason Ian Drucker, Kenneth Choi, Ricardo Hoyos, Abby Quinn, Rachel Crow, and Grace Dzienny.

On the run in the year 1987, Bumblebee finds refuge in a junkyard in a small Californian beach town. Charlie (Hailee Steinfeld), on the cusp of turning 18 and trying to find her place in the world, discovers Bumblebee, battle-scarred and broken. When Charlie revives him, she quickly learns this is no ordinary, yellow VW bug.

Bumblebee is now in theaters.
